The weekend before last, I went to Cambridge to check out the proposed
sites for Syd's bench.
Addenbrooke's Hospital was pretty uninspiring, to say the least.
The site was huge, but covered in car parks and buildings and sick people,
with no lawns or gardens, apart from a lame little shrubbery.
Another suggested site was the University of Cambridge Botanical
Gardens. I managed to get there just before they closed, and was given
a contact number to discuss the possibilities of having a bench placed
in the gardens.
I finally got through to Dr Tim Upson, the Director of the UCBG, on
Wednesday. This is a summary of what he said:
* The gardens are very popular, and already contain a great number of
benches. As space is becoming scarcer, they like to ensure
that each bench they install is in memory of someone who was,
in some small way, connected with the Gardens.
As an example, he suggested that someone
who used to visit frequently would be appropriate. I explained that I
was enquiring on behalf of others, and I didn't directly know the
person in question, but he grew up in Cambridge, and I understood that
he spent a lot of time in the Gardens[1]. Dr. Upson said our proposal
for a bench in his memory sounded perfectly acceptable.
* The UCBG have been using the same bench company, called Lister, for
decades, and have a standard bench which they always use (for continuity
etc.) Some stuff about the bench:

Hi Col,
Excellent news! Well done for keeping everyone interested and the
whole thing going. đŸ™‚
I'm back now, and contacted Dr. Upson last week, but no reply yet. I
just acknowledged his reply to the email I sent just before I left and
let him know that I'm back and ready to proceed.
Any idea how to transfer the funds from your bank account to mine?
I'm not sure if we can get them to do a direct debit if we swap
details, or if you can send a cheque, of if it's more complicated than
that.
Cheers,
Spence
----
11/04/00
Hi Col,
Can you remind me if it was 600 or 650 pounds for the bench? I will
send you a few hundred quid next week. It's probably easier for you if
I get a bank cheque or something made out in English money. I can pay
the fees this end (I will deduct it from the fund). That way it will
save fees your end.
We won't know the final price until the site has been found, cos it
might be that we need some form of platform (flagstones or something)
to rest it on (depending on how squishy the earth is). I forget the
details, but I'll look up the most recent quote we had, soon.
I beleive it was of the order of 400 squid, as opposed to 600.
Which leaves us with the question of what to do with the rest,
but we might as well get this finalized first, so we know how
much, exactly, we'll have left over.
Would you like it made payable to you? You can then stash it in an
account until such time as you have to pay for it.
Yeah, I think that would be best. There's no point in my opening
any other sort of account for just a few weeks, so payable to me is fine.
Once we know the total amount, I can send the rest on.
Come to think of it, it might be better just to send it all once
we know how much it will cost in total. I can just write a cheque
from my current account, then you could send the same amount up to me.
It doesn't matter if I get overdrawn that month cos I've got a
free overdraft facility.
This looks like getting closer to conclusion!
Yep! Do you have any plans to visit England in the foreseeable?
Spence
----
11/08/00
Hi Col,
They reckon that it'll take about 4-6 weeks to arrive from the time
I finalized the order etc, so call it 2 - 4 weeks now. They said they'll
invoice me for it when it arrives, so there's no need to sort out the
dosh until then.
Have an excellent trip!

Yeah, the trouble is I'm about 100 miles from Cambridge now. I might be

Hi Col
Nice to see you posting to Echoes!
Chers! I dunno when my last was, I think it was another sightings

I thought I could just get a cheque made out in English money and post
it off. Doesn't worry me either way if I send it to you or direct to Doc
Upson. Why don't we wait for the bill to arrive & figure it out from
there?
Yeah, just wait and see. They seem to be taking their time about it
as usual...
Can't recall this guy. My call to Echoes for somebody in the Cambridge
area has received no response either. I suppose we will have to wait to
see if anybody surfaces.
Ah, bummer. Well, I'm off upcountry ('kin Cheshire!) to see Radiohead
cos I was sleeping off the night before while all the tickets for their
London
gigs sold out. I might be able to call in on the way home, but it depends
on time really, I dunno what time the Gardens close this time of year.

Hi Col,
I called in on the Gardens on the way back from a top Radiohead
gig last week. Took a bunch of shots, and I'm waiting for Tesco to
develop 'em now. I'll have to get someone to scan them though,
cos I don't have access to a scanner. I could send them directly
to you if you like, though I dunno how long that would take.
Spence
----
10/10/00
Hi Col,
Good point, I forgot you can get the professionals to scan
them in for you. I should have got Tesco to put them on
disc when I dropped them off but never mind.
Cool that you can just write a checque and send it to me. Still
no sign of the invoice, but who gives a rats ass now the
bench is there? :^)
When I went to take the photos, I had an eerie feeling Syd
would be sitting on the bench, like how he turned up during
the WYWH session. He wasn't though :^| For all I know my
arse is the first to sit on it.
I meant to say, the bench is directly facing some pretty
unspectacular looking greenhouses, which is a shame. I
had thought from Dr Upson's map it would be facing the
other way but there's a small hedge there blocking that
view. I suppose now that there are so few sites left we can't
be too choosy... Still if you look around you, you get
some lovely views.

You would be aware that Dion is a personal friend of mine. I told him about
the bench earlier this year but it did not even occur to me that I should
caution him not to spread the news about the bench, as it was a very
private low key project.
I now find myself in a very awkward situation. There are others involved
who I gave my word to that details of the bench would never be given to any
sort of media. (Mainly because the donors wanted it to be our very own
project but also to protect Syd from exposure and to protect the bench from
damage).
At this time I am unable to provide you with further info. I am seeking
advice from others involved and IF they give the OK then I will tell you
all about it. However, I suspect that they will still want to shun
publicity and therefore I will be unable to assist.
I hope you understand that my word is my bond.

Why does he have to reveal the location in order to tell
the story? Seems to me that we might influence him to omit
the location, or to invoke creative license and say it's in
the park near the Gog Magog hills. For that matter he could
mislead by telling part of the truth -- that someone proposed
a bench at Addenbrookes Hospital -- leaving out the fact that
a different location was chosen.

When I wrote that, I knew how Dion found it but I was
trying to be gentle with Colin. Now it seems appropriate to
be a little less shy about imposing my opinion. Colin, you
said after that, that you wouldn't tell anyone unless they
were going to Cambridge, and wrote to you and asked. Not long
after, you volunteered the info in a letter to all of echoes.
My choice would be to keep it secret from everyone who didn't
join the "bench committee". I don't think it's necessarily
a good thing even for Barrett to know about.
In case it's not immediately obvious: this would rule out
informing echoes of the problem and asking them to threaten
Tim with a book boycott. That would be counterproductive.

I hope to do as well at biting my tongue.
Any sort of boycott attempt would be futile and also counterproductive.
I think our best opportunity for damage control is for Colin to grant

Hi Tim
Before I get into this letter you will note that it is being sent to a
number of other people as well. These other folks played a major role in
getting the bench erected and I am keeping them informed of all
developments as we go along.
The majority of these folk have now given me the go ahead to tell the story
of the bench. We ask if you include this story in your book NOT TO DIVULGE
THE LOCATION OF THE BENCH. On the assumption that you are happy to go along
with this then I will tell all.
I (and most of the others) belong to the internets foremost Pink Floyd
mailing list called Echoes. There are around 1000 dedicated fans on this
list that has been running for many years. We have a number of members who
David Gilmour would be familiar with and others who are associated with
Roger Waters and other band members. We like to consider ourselves as one
big family and a lot of interaction occurs outside of the list as well.
Around 3 years ago a suggestion was made that we should have some sort
of 'monument' to honour Syd. I think a suggestion was thrown in that
perhaps a park bench may be a fitting tribute. Anyway, it stuck in my mind,
so I decided to make the dream become a reality.
At that time I had a sponsor for my site who paid a small amount for
each 'hit' the site received. It didn't return a great deal of money but it
occured to me that if I could get Echoes members to visit my site daily and
click on my sponsors ads, we could perhaps raise enough money to get the
bench erected. So I launched the 'Click For Syd' campaign.
The campaign certainly caught the attention on Echoes members and soon we
had hundreds of people clicking on the ads on a daily basis! We managed to
raise a few hundred dollars over a period of time but apparently what I was
doing was frowned upon by the sponsors and they terminated my account.
We still had a large shortfall in funds, from memory we needed to raise
around $1600 (Aus) or about $800 (US), although I could be way out with
those figures.
After seeking advice from others it was then suggested that I call for
direct donations. This I did and after about 6 months we managed to raise
enough funds.
It was then a 'delicate' matter of negotiating with the curator of the
Botanical Gardens about where the bench should be erected. It seems that
most of the benches in the gardens are in honour of dead people and our
negotiator never lied to the curator but simply 'forgot' to tell him that
Syd wasn't dead!
The plaque (is that how it's spelt?) was subject to much debate as to the
wording. We finally agreed on;
It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here...
Place by friends of The Piper /E\
The /E\ denoting Echoes
The wording was voted on by the folk who had made a direct donation and it
was also decided at that time that we should keep the bench a private
project to be enjoyed by Echoes members. There were several reasons for
this, including possible damage to the bench (if the word got out), the
fact that Syd would be in the spotlight again and possibly subject to
harrasment and finally that we just wanted it to be a private thing.
Since the bench was erected (about 2 years ago) some Echoes members have
visited the bench and had their photograph taken sitting on it. It's
becoming a bit of a shrine and in fact was visited by an Echoes member just
2 weeks ago and I am currently working on getting his pictures on my site.
The whole project took around 2 years to put together, it involved many
people and countless hours of discussion. However we made it and are really
proud of the result.
You know the rest of the story. Dion visited Syd on January 26 and told him
about the bench. I know you have some stills from the video and I have seen
the video and there is no doubt that Syd was thrilled with the news about
the bench, although I very much doubt he would have approved of being
filmed if he had been made aware of it. I have told Dion that I certainly
don't approve of his actions in filming Syd. (As I don't approve of the
actions of Phil Waters who twice now has climbed over Syd's back fence and
stolen his paint brushes!) I know it was Phil who tipped you off about
Dion's visit.
So now you have most of the story, as I said at the start, we are relying
on you not to divulge the location of the bench.
Regards
Col Turner

I'm thinkin' it's a good idea, properly executed.
I would suggest something low-key - almost obtuse - instead

It's awfully considerate of you to think of them there,
Col, but in my opinion, no explanations are owed to anybody.
Just because the writer is exploiting a mistake, doesn't
mean you must reveal more or justify anything. Making a
cryptic statement about it, as Wayne suggests, would cause
undeserved resentment towards us. If anyone reads the book
and demands an answer, the right one is: "Sorry, no comment."
I don't quite see why this keeps coming up for a new poll.
I always take the same position, and I think the bear has been
consistent. For example, back when the idea of telling the
story to Spare Bricks was raised, he wrote:
> as was pointed out, it is in the echoes archive for those
> that care to dig.

But it comes up once again. Somebody always wants to tell
somebody something, forgetting what we said whenever we were
asked. That's why the cat out of the bag now. But if anyone
hears the cat, I'll still say, "What cat?"

Hi All
I tend to lean Mark's way about 'no comment' but expect I will cop a lot
of flack when the book comes out. Perhaps I should cross that bridge
when I come to it?
In the meantime, unless there is an overwhelming demand to do otherwise,
I will not say anything further about this matter.
Cheers

in the several intervening months, i am sure you can find a
flak jacket on ebay. ;-)
another option would be to work on a standard reply, such as
"no comment."
or, if you're feeling particularly verbose you could confirm
that you were involved and expand the above to
"yeah, no comment."

I think Mark's "no comment" comment needs no further comment!

Hi All
Just found the following at http://www.pink-floyd.org/barrett/madcbarr.htm
In the winner (sic) of 2001, a hard-core group of fans (who call themselves
'Echoes' and use '/E\' as their symbol) paid for a dedicatory bench to be
placed in Cambridge, in a location which they have asked to be
kept 'secret'.
One of their number, an Antipodean called Dion Johnson, knocked on
Barrett's door to show him a map of where to find it, and was delighted
that his taciturn hero not only asked for a copy of the map, but gave him
a 'R K Barrett' autograph. [...]
Not exactly accurate (and I noticed quite a few spelling errors in the
main body of the article).
The person who is referred to as stealing the paintbrushes from Syd's back
yard is none other than Phil Waters. (I didn't tell you that!)
Should Echoes know about this bear?
Cheers

Hi All
Long time since I gave an update.
The bench had another visitor a few weeks ago. Edison from South America
came and parked his bum on the bench and his pictures can be seen at
http://www.pinkfloydz.com/ss22b.htm
Edison has told me that the bench has been moved! I understand it's not
too far from where it was before but I think it's now closer to the
fountains. Edison is going to knock up another map when he gets a chance.
I'm not going to post the info to Echoes, rather just keep it amoungst
ourselves.
Cheers

moved?
can we get them to do that once a year, and always with
a plain bench at the old site and a little sign that
says "have you got it yet?" ?
odd that they'd move it without telling anybody...or did
they?
ttfn,
bear.

Well, as far as I know my email address is the only one they have, and
they didn't tell me, so I guess not.

hi all.
it has been a little over 3 years since this particular
group has had any significant communciations, at which
point (just by way of reminder) it was going along
like this:

coherent list.

from each of you.
send it to me asap please.

Hi Mark
Hope this finds you well.
With the sad passing of Syd, I have had an offer from
the Bannisters (Former promoters of the Bath &
Knebworth festivals) about placing some flowers
on Syd's bench.
As there no longer seems to be a need to protect
Syd's privacy, I was seeking your thoughts on having
the bench photographed with the flowers on, and
advertising the bench as a place to lay flowers as
a memorial. What say you?
Best

My apologies because some of you got this twice. It seems there
was a problem in doing a reply-to-all from Andre's email. Please
let me know if any of the addresses I used are redundant.

It seems that Tom has already seen the pictures, but for
some reason -- possibly just to annoy me -- he is trying to
stir things up. He isn't discreet, and I say "no" to giving
him further access.
Tom referred to http://www.sydbarrett.org/abenchforsyd.htm
which was posted by the guy who, after hearing about the bench,
went and bothered Barrett at his house and shot video of him
from close up without permission, etc.

Alright, no problem.
Although it doesn't sound like the Tom I seem to
know from Echoes, no goodies for him :-)

hoi andre.
it is indeed tom hood (th) from echoes.
the subject of the bench came up (it was confused with dave ward's
send-a-get-well-card-from-a-bazillion-floyd-fans-to-syd-in-the-hospital
idea) in another set of conversations and he turned to echoes for a
reminder.
nothing sinister....and nothing to do with "dion" [damn him for pestering
syd and videotaping the event] and his syd appreciation society website.
(btw, i sent him a note, bcc'd you guys.)
ttfn,
bear.
