Beyond technical orchestration, the echoes list maintained strict written and unwritten cultural practices and community traditions that bound subscribers across the globe together as a distinct pre-Web subculture.

Bad Word Rules:
To preserve echoes, starting from its .com origin, we strictly eschewed any bad words like "b00tleg" (even now i still hesitate to use the naked word) in favour of obfuscating terms like "footwear", "roio" (recordings of indeterminate origin), and the derivative "cookies" (pronounce roio with a crunchy chocolate & filling branded sandwich product name in mind :) in our discussions: bear really didn't want his boss coming into his office with anything like "Piracy? Here??! Stop right now!!". 3 decades later we're still here, talking.

Flame-War Prevention & Content Rules:
To preserve a highly civil and focused environment, echoes strictly eschewed any "who is best" discussions or band-member rankings. This foundational rule successfully checked potential tribalism and prevented standard internet flame-wars before they could derail on-topic threads.

"Roots and Branches:"
Longtime subscriber Wayne Shelor became a beloved operational fixture on the list by curating and forwarding historical tidbits, side projects, and contextual band trivia. Sent under the recurring headline banner "Roots and Branches," this long-running series served as an ongoing educational deep-dive for the list community.

AFD on echoes: A defining cultural pillar of the echoes mailing list was its legendary annual April/All Fools' Day (AFD) posts, which generated massive engagement and high anticipation across the global pre-Web Floyd internet community.

Prominent Public Members & Community Monikers: The global list server acted as a gathering space for uniquely talented individuals, including multiple list veterans who maintain notable public legacies and some that didn't:

Jordan Taylor: Empresario and echoes subscriber Jordan Taylor and his company, Planet Earth Management (PEM) arrived just prior to the 1994 TDB tour with arrangements for special tour packages (credentials and tix for great seats paired with local hotel rooms) for US TDB shows. Jordan was also part of the team behind the creation of original "blimpbits" packages. Both world-facing and personally, Jordan was (and is) best described as a mensch, becoming good friends with a number of echoesians.
David Willey: Renowned echoes subscriber David Willey is widely known publicly as a physicist, prominent scientific consultant, and energetic entertainer.
Rachel Funari & The Watersite Sect: Highly active subscriber Rachel Funari was a prominent journalist and feminist editor. Within the playful internal nomenclature of the list server, Rachel was affectionately known and celebrated by fellow subscribers as the "high priestess of the watersite sect." Tragically, Rachel vanished while on a backpacking trip to Bruny Island, Tasmania, in March 2011, a high-profile missing persons case that deeply impacted her close companions and peers across the global echoes community.

Fleeting Moments /e\ echoes meetups: A foundational parts of the echoes mailing list culture was politeness in our dealings. this facilitated friendly, in person, informal meetups where ever and when ever was convenient to whom so ever. some of those temporals were documented.

🎸 Band Awareness

While Echosians never knew for certain if members of Pink Floyd or their core management directly subscribed to the list, the band was verified to be explicitly aware of echoes, and it was known to bear that several record company employees were active or lurking subscribers.
(nb: subscription was anonymous, requiring only a valid email address, the sending the "subscribe echoes" command to echoserv@, and good behaviour.)

Narrative Background:

This effort by various echoes subscribers who created this parcel's physical components was aided by bear who packed and shipped the unified parcel directly to Pink Floyd management, which resulted in a formal "Cease and Desist" letter.

Resolution: Formal legal notification issued to the list administration who responded that every item sent was a hand crafted original gift and, discussion being our purpose, the echoes list would "keep talking".
